英语角之文化碰撞

英语角迎来了第八周。六点刚过,外教Mr.Christopher Robin Dockstader,Mr.David Tony Whitlock,Mr.David Daniel Riddiford,Mr.Brett Michael Gearing,Mr.Robert Kerry Mateja和Mr.Michael James Fisher陆续来到了图书馆。

应万圣节的到来,Mr.Robert Kerry Mateja身着一身巫师服装,引得许多学生将他团团围住。他讲到在万圣节,他的此番打扮在美国很普遍,但在中国却显得很奇怪。他旁边的同学顺势提到春节时期,在中国北方的人们会吃饺子,而南方的人们则会打火锅。此次与Mr.Robert Kerry Mateja的谈话无不透露着不同文化的碰撞。

Mr.Brett Michael Gearing则与同学谈到课堂学习。当一位同学大胆表示上某节外教课就像在听讲座,有点无聊时。Mr.Brett Michael Gearing精辟地指出若在课堂上积极回答外教问题,这堂课就是一次交流;若只是听着外教讲课默不作声,那这堂课只能是一次讲座。其他同学纷纷点头表示认可。由此可见,上外教的课也是一个文化碰撞的过程,效果如何取决于你的态度。

在图书馆的其他角落里,Mr.Christopher Robin Dockstader,Mr.David Tony Whitlock,Mr.David Daniel Riddiford和Mr.Michael James Fisher与他们周围的同学同样聊得热火朝天。好一段时间后,外教和同学们才带着满足的笑容陆续离开了英语角。

English Corner:Cultural Collision

The English Corner has been held for the 8th continuous week. At around 6:00p.m. Mr. Christopher Robin Dockstader, Mr. Tony Whitlock, Mr. Daniel Riddiford, Mr. Brett Michael Gearing, Mr. Robert Kerry Mateja and Mr. Michael James Fisher came to the library to join the long-awaiting students who immediately surrounded them.

On the arrival of Halloween, Mr. Robert Kerry Matejadressed himselfin a wizard costume,whichcaught the attention of many students . Hesaidthat hiscostumewas common in the United States during the Halloween season,however, in China, it was very strange. A student next to the him thus associated this phenomenon withthe Spring Festival period: people in northern China would eat dumplings, while hot pot would be served in the Southern part of China. The conversation with Mr. Robert Kerry Mateja revealed the collision of different cultures.

Mr. Brett Michael Gearing talked about in-class learning. When a student expressed a bold idea that the experience of attending foreign teachers’ classeswas like listening to boring lectures,Mr. Brett Michael Gearing brilliantly pointed out that if students actively answered questions put forward by foreign teachers,the whole classwould be like a conversation; On the contrary, if students only listened to foreign teachers silentlywithout any feedback, this class could only be a lecture. Other students noddedwith recognition. Thus, the teaching processwas another reflection ofcultural collision, andthe effect depended onstudents’ attitude.

Elsewhere, Mr.Christopher Robin Dockstader, Mr.David Tony Whitlock, Mr.David Daniel Riddiford, and Mr.Michael James Fisher chatted with their surrounding students in full swing.

After a long while, foreign teachers and students left the English Corner with smiles on their faces.
