3月9日傍晚,伴着滴滴雨声，英语角在图书馆一楼准时开始。今天到场的有三位外教，他们分别是Dr. Phillip Stevenson，Mr. Christopher Dockstader和Mr. Robert Mateja。

Phillip谈到他以前在英格兰教了18年的书，因此决定改变一下人生的轨迹和工作环境。于是在网上找各个国家的工作，最后决定来到了珠海教书。在来珠海前，Phillip曾经到过日本工作，就和我们谈起了中国和日本的不同点。日本人永远都是很客气，他们不会轻易地跟别人谈起自己的事情以及自己的情感。与日本人聊天，只会聊一些关于天气之类的话题。与中国人不同的是，日本人讲英语带有很重的口音，Phillip在听他们讲英语时要十分专心认真地听。一位同学问他在日本怎么跟别人交流。Philip回答说他在大学学习过日语，所以可以跟日本人交流。

另外，Phillip觉得在中国，可会有很多人看他以及和他搭讪。但这种情况在伦敦是不会出现的。伦敦街头有各式各样的人群，人们不会看到你是亚洲人就会驻足下来看多你几眼，而是觉得大家都是一样，也不会问你来自哪里的。Phillip还提到，英国大学与中国大学也是大不相同的。在英国，大学生都是很自由的，学校不会断网，也不会一定要求同学们去上课。最后还提到了两国大学学生之间相处方式大不相同。

快乐的时光总是过得很快，一个小时就随着滴答滴答的雨声逝去，而今天的英语角也结束了。

English Corner: Discussion of Different Cultures

It was a rainy day on March 9th . Our English corner was held in the library lobby on time. Three foreign teachers attended today’s English Corner. They were Dr. Phillip Stevenson, Mr. Christopher Dockstader and Mr. Robert Mateja.

Phillip talked about himself at the beginning and then he shared his experience of different cultures between Japan and China. In communication, the Japanese just talked about weather with others while not mentioning anything about their emotions. What was more, Japanese people had strong accents in speaking English, because they used their own pronunciation methods. As a result, even for people like Phillip, who took College Japanese courses before must listen attentively when communicating with the Japanese.

In China, people were curious about the foreigners, so they were willing to talk with them. But in London, people regarded it as a common phenomenon for meeting different ethnic groups in the streets. Even you are an Asian, they would treat you in the same way. The academic institutions in the UK and China were very different. In the UK, students had their freedom including having classes or not and whether to live in the dorms .

Time flies and the English corner came to an end in the rain soon.
