演讲内容简介:
In ancient Greece justice had evolved from one of simple revenge into a more objective judicial system that included codified law, and a court system with jury etc. Nonetheless the idea of revenge as justice has persisted as a theme in various narratives at various times in Western history. The great revenge stories of the ancient Greek narratives influenced Roman poetry and drama, which in turn influenced Elizabethan and Jacobean drama and the epic poetry of Milton. The most recent manifestation of revenge as a major theme in narrative can be seen in modern cinema and theatre. In the lecture David will look at some examples of the revenge theme from all of these periods and attempt to make some relevant connections between them.
