题目:Language and Art
演讲人:Dr. Richard Stopford
Richard Stopford holds a PhD in Philosophy from Durham University. His specialist area is aesthetics and philosophy of art. However, he has moved towards more central philosophical questions recently, considering the nature of truth and ontology.
He has lectured and tutored at Durham University before coming to China. Before returning to full-time beard-scratching (note, possible answer to topic question), he has had a go at many things – running cocktail bars, marketing, project managing at IT companies, collecting trolleys in a supermarket carpark. However, teaching has proven to be a better answer to the existential problems of his career trajectory.
演讲内容简介:
When people are asked to think about art, they perhaps think of beautiful, unique objects, skillfully created. But around the turn of the twentieth century, artists working in a variety of areas seemed to throw out the rulebook: out with beauty, out with uniqueness; out, even, with skill. Art seemed to become less about the object and more about the idea. Much of art, arguably, became conceptual. For some, this conceptual art was a new phase in art; for some, it was a disaster.
In this lecture, some key areas of the philosophy of art will be introduced. We will then apply some of these theories to selected works of art. In particular, the role of language and concepts to art will be discussed and explored.
Needless to say, conclusions probably won''t be reached, but hopefully a good discussion will be!
