 I come to China from Scotland where I studied and taught for many years. I initially studied English Literature but drifted into more interdisciplinary areas during Masters degrees in 'Irish & Scottish Studies' and 'Comparative Literature & Thought'. I completed this trajectory with a PhD thesis on the subject of laughter considered from within a range of perspectives and disciplines. Since graduating I have taught at both college and university level both within Scotland and further afield.

This talk will seek to outline the history and development of Hallowe'en as a western festival routed in Celtic traditions refracted through the prism of Christian belief. From its origins as a seasonal celebration linked to the cycle of the harvests, Hallowe'en has been adopted as a celebration of spiritual theatrics and of commercial opportunity. This lecture will begin to query the degree to which contemporary Hallowe'en festivities remain 'haunted' by their own prehistory.
