Zhang Yan, female, presently the assistant lecturer in the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Beijing Normal University , Zhuhai.
I spent my undergraduate years in China West Normal University , where I was conferred the degree of B.A. in TESOL. In 2007 I received my M.A. from Beijing Normal University , where I specialized in the theory and practice of translation. During my graduate years, I was fortunately selected as a visiting student to participate in a short-term program on western classical and medieval culture, which was presided by Fu Jen Catholic University of Taiwan. This academic tour was most fruitful and beneficial to me because I not only shared thoughts with the outstanding students from Taiwan and mainland China , but also listened to the enlightening lectures of the distinguished scholars of Taiwan .
Well equipped, I started my teaching career right after graduation from Beijing Normal University . From the very first day I teach in this University, I bear the belief in my mind that I can learn as much from my students as they can learn from me. Therefore interaction is always preferred to the teacher-centered dictating in my classroom. Actually, it proves more effective to make students learn by sparking their thoughts and provoking their discussion. In this process the teacher can obtain some feedbacks, which serve as a basis on which I adjust my teaching method. This, I believe, will eventually lead to pedagogical improvement.
Courses I’ve been teaching include: College English (intended for non-English majors), Translation (E-C, C-E), and English Lexicology (intended for English majors).
Besides teaching, research is also college teachers’ top priority. My reading and research interest lies in cross-cultural communication and the translation of Chinese classic works.
With my preliminary academic exploration and some immature opinions in these fields, I haven’t had myself published, out of my respect for scholarship. It takes more accumulation and mellowing to produce a well-grounded thesis, I believe. But the day will come.
