At 7:30 P.M. on September 9, the School of Foreign Languages held the opening ceremony for the freshmen in Room A202 of Liyun Building. Doctor and Professor Cheng Xiaotang, dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature from Beijing Normal University in Beijing, was invited to this ceremony as an honorable guest. 30 leaders and teacher representatives from the School of Foreign Languages took part in this event.
The opening ceremony started with the national anthem of China. Then, Professor Cheng delivered the opening address. He talked about how he loved our beautiful campus and the close relationship between BNUZ and BNU. He also sang high praise for the the young staff members of SFL. Then Doctor and Professor Tao Wenhao, Dean of the SFL, addressed the meeting. He introduced the history and the spirit of SFL in detail. After reviewing the great achievement we got all these eight years, Dean Tao also talked about the future plan of our school, which gave confidence to everybody present. In addition, he also gave some precious suggestions for the freshmen on how to study in university.
So far there are 71 teachers in SFL. Among them, 30 teachers are from abroad. During the ceremony, 5 teachers representatives gave speeches. Ms. Wu Wenxia, Mr. Zhen Wenkang and Ms. Wang Fang on behalf of the Chinese teachers gave speeches in English, French and Japanese respectively. And Mr. Charlie Reis and Mr. Wataru Sato on behalf of the overseas teachers addressed the meeting in English and Japanese respectively. This part won a big round of applause from the freshmen and was the climax of the ceremony.
Then Li Jun, who is a senior English-major student and Tang Xiuxiu, who is a sophomore student of the Japanese major, shared their experience with the freshmen on learning and living on campus. As a freshman representative, Xu Zhikai said that she would pursue her new dream from the new beginning. The ceremony ended with a multimedia presentation which consist of pictures and videos of various students activities held by SFL and pictures of the teachers who won the 2010 Excellent Staff Members Awards.
